Midnight in Paris
Midnight in Paris is
an American romantic comedy fantasy film written and
directed by Woody Allen. It has Paris as location and has 94 minutes of running time.
The movie was released in 2011 and was nominated
for the 84º Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Art Direction, but
it just won for Best Original Screenplay (when the script isn’t based in
other story). Great actors and actresses are in the movie, like Owen Wilson,
Marion Cotillard and Rachel McAdams.
The movie doesn’t have many special
effects, but Woody Allen can pass his vision of fantasy through the main character Gil, which is played by Owen
Wilson. The fantasy can be seeing in the costumes
used by the people from de 1920s and the classic
music present in the movie.
Gil is a nostalgic screenwriter who goes on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's
family and mysteriously can go back to the 1920s every day at midnight. While
he is in the 1920s, he meets many artists, writers that he idolizes, like F.
Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway,
Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali. I think these artists are almost like heroes to him. Besides that, he
meets Adriana (which is played by Marion Cotillard), a beautiful woman and Gil
fall in love with her.
Gil tries to write a story based on his own life and he gives to Stein
to read it. Stein says that the book is very good, but the main character needs
to realize that he is being betrayed by his fiancée. Then, he confronts
his fiancée Inez (played by Rachel McAdams) and breaks up with her and after
that, Gil decides to move to Paris alone.
In my opinion, the movie was very good and the
performance of the actors were great, but to better understand the film is
necessary to have knowledge about the 1920s.
